Autodesk Adds NVIDIA RTX Acceleration Support to Maya 2020 and Arnold 6

Autodesk has introduced new versions of Maya 2020 and Arnold 6, which introduce new GPU hardware acceleration capabilities. Arnold 6, along with NVIDIA RTX GPUs and RTX Servers, can now be used to render at all stages of a project, from development to final rendering. NVIDIA also introduced a new NVIDIA Studio driver, which includes optimizations for Maya 2020 and Arnold 6.

Behind the new features in Maya 2020 and Arnold 6 are NVIDIA RTX GPUs. Autodesk has built a version of the Arnold GPU using the NVIDIA OptiX framework, which allows you to use RT hardware cores for ray tracing and Turing architecture tensor cores for AI denoising. NVIDIA RTX provides real-time interactive rendering as well as big performance boosts for batch and final rendering. The latest update allows NVIDIA RTX GPUs to render several times faster than a standard dual-socket server:

New software features include:

  • a unified renderer that allows you to easily switch between CPU and GPU;
  • support for OSL, OpenVDB volumes, on-demand texture loading, most LPEs, lights, shaders, and all cameras;
  • new USD components such as Hydra Render Delegate, Arnold USD Procedural, and USD Schemas for Arnold nodes and properties now available on GitHub;
  • performance improvements that increase efficiency, including faster processing of subdivs on geometry folds, an improved Physical Sky shader, and multiple scattering in microfacets of dielectric materials;
  • scalable performance for multi-GPU systems and RTX servers.

On RTX graphics cards, Autodesk Maya 2020 provides the following new hardware accelerated features:

  • the Proximity Wrap deformer, which uses memory more optimally and significantly speeds up the work of designers, allowing you to achieve results faster;
  • improved support for Smooth Mesh Preview - now consumes less memory and previews run on the GPU whenever possible, which is especially useful when working with highly detailed scenes that quickly fill up memory;
  • Autodesk Arnold 6 can be used for GPU production rendering.

In addition, NVIDIA graphics cards improve Maya's caching capabilities for modeling, shading, and rendering, helping you achieve photorealistic results faster in the viewport. Scene build tools and caching leverage the power of RTX accelerators to quickly load environments, characters, and complex builds without losing interactivity.
