Tesla cars learned to recognize traffic lights and stop signs

Tesla has been developing autopilot for recognizing traffic signals and stop signs for a long time, and now this feature is finally ready for public rollout. The automaker has reportedly added traffic and stop sign recognition to its Autopilot technology as part of the latest 2020.12.6 software update.

This feature was previewed in March to early access users and is now rolling out to a wider range of car owners in the US. The update's release note says the feature, which is still in beta, will give Tesla vehicles the ability to recognize traffic lights even when they're turned off and automatically slow down at intersections.

Drivers will be notified when the car is about to slow down and the car will stop at the stop line, which the system will automatically detect from signs and markings and display on the interior screen. The person behind the wheel will then have to press the shifter or accelerator pedal to confirm that it is safe to continue driving. While the feature is available to drivers in the US, Tesla will have to refine it to work with road markings in other countries. Tesla owners outside the US will need to be patient while this feature rolls out to their regions.
