Russian Internet giant Yandex and Hyundai Mobis, one of the world's largest manufacturers of automotive components, have signed an agreement to collaborate on self-driving technologies for the vehicles of the future.
Yandex is currently actively developing an autopilot. The company tested the first prototypes of unmanned vehicles in the spring of 2017.
Today, test zones operate in Skolkovo and Innopolis, where you can ride a Yandex taxi with a self-governing system. Moreover, at the end of last year, the Russian IT giant received a license to test unmanned vehicles in Israel, and in January 2019 showed an unmanned vehicle at CES in Nevada.
The autopilot system involves the use of cameras, various sensors and advanced software algorithms. Yandex's self-driving cars strictly follow the rules of the road, identify and avoid obstacles, let pedestrians through and, if necessary, brake urgently.
As part of the agreement, Yandex and Hyundai Mobis intend to jointly develop a software and hardware system for unmanned vehicles of the fourth and fifth levels of automation. The platform will be based on Yandex technologies, in particular, machine learning and computer vision tools.
Note that vehicles with the fourth level of automation will be able to move independently in most situations. The fifth level provides that cars move completely autonomously throughout the entire trip - from start to finish.
At the first stage of cooperation, Yandex and Hyundai Mobis intend to develop new prototypes of unmanned vehicles based on production vehicles from Hyundai and Kia. In the future, the new software and hardware complex is planned to be offered to automakers who will be able to use it to create unmanned vehicles, including for car sharing companies and taxi services.
The agreement also provides for the expansion of cooperation between the companies, for example, the use of speech, navigation and cartographic and other technologies of Yandex in joint products.
