Raspberry Pi 4 base version now has 2GB of RAM

The Raspberry Pi single-board computer will soon be eight years old - the first model was released on February 29, 2012. And on this occasion, the creators of this popular device decided to permanently reduce the price of one of the versions of the current Raspberry Pi 4.

The recommended retail price for a Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB of RAM is now $35, down from $45 before. Recall that the current β€œraspberry” was originally released in versions with 1, 2 and 4 GB of RAM, and earlier just the 1 GB version was sold for $35. But from now on, it will be produced only for industrial customers, while for ordinary consumers there will be only a cheaper 2 GB version and a 4 GB system for $55.

In a blog post on the Raspberry Pi website, Raspberry Pi CEO and Founder Eben Upton said the reason for the price cut was the drop in the cost of the RAM itself. Upton also noted that the original Raspberry Pi was sold for the same price of $35 in 2012. However, if inflation is taken into account, it turns out that the Raspberry Pi as a whole has become more affordable.

Today's Raspberry Pi 4 is also about 40 times faster than the original 2012 model. It was equipped with a single-core ARM1176JZF-S processor with a clock frequency of 700 MHz, while the current model has a quad-core Cortex-A53 processor with a frequency of 1,5 GHz. Also, the original Raspberry Pi only had 256MB of RAM.

In total, since the release of the first model, more than 30 million different versions of the Raspberry Pi have been sold. The computer has become popular both among ordinary users as a platform for creating various devices and experiments, and in industry for creating various automation systems and performing other tasks.
