VirtualBox 6.1 Beta Release

Nine months after the formation of the last significant branch, Oracle presented the first beta release of the virtualization system VirtualBox 6.1.

All improvements:

  • Added support for hardware mechanisms proposed in the fifth generation of Intel Core i (Broadwell) processors for organizing nested launch of virtual machines;
  • The old method of supporting 3D graphics, based on the VBoxVGA driver, has been removed. For 3D it is recommended to use the new VBoxSVGA and VMSVGA drivers;
  • Added a software on-screen keyboard that can be used as a keyboard in guest OSes;
  • There is now support for importing virtual machines from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. The functions of exporting virtual machines to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure have been expanded, including the ability to create several virtual machines without re-downloading them;
  • Added an option to export virtual machines to cloud environments that use the paravirtualization mechanism;
  • The graphical interface has improved the creation of virtual machine images (VISO) and expanded the capabilities of the built-in file manager;
  • VirtualBox Manager has improved the display of the list of virtual machines, groups of virtual machines are more prominently highlighted, the search for VMs has been improved, and the tool area has been pinned to fix the position when scrolling the list of VMs;
  • A built-in VM attribute editor has been added to the panel with information about the virtual machine, allowing you to change some settings without opening the configurator;
  • The media enumeration code has been optimized to work faster and load less on the CPU in situations where there are a large number of registered media. The ability to add existing or new media has returned to Virtual Media Manager;
  • The convenience of configuring storage parameters for a VM has been improved, support for changing the controller bus type has been provided, and the ability to move attached elements between controllers using the drag&drop interface has been provided.
  • The dialog with session information has been expanded and improved;
  • In the input system, support for horizontal mouse scrolling has been added using the IntelliMouse Explorer protocol;
  • Added the vboximg-mount module with experimental support for direct access to NTFS, FAT and ext2/3/4 file systems inside a disk image, implemented on the guest system side and not requiring support for this file system on the host side. Work is still possible in read-only mode.
