At the Bethesda Game Days 2020 event, the developer revealed that Wastelanders content will be available to all players, regardless of their character level. The update is also designed so that single-player gamers can easily jump into the action like they did in previous entries in the series. Wastelanders will take place a year after the start of the main story Fallout 76.

There will be two main factions in Fallout 76: Settlers and Raiders. Each of them lives in a new territory, and you can take tasks and trade from them. You can communicate with representatives of both factions, and occupy both sides. Your choice to help any of them will earn reputation points. Some characters roam the game world. And some of them can be recruited. After that, they will return to your camp to protect it and send you on missions.

To maintain the story aspect, Fallout 76 will automatically move you and your party member into a separate session when visiting quest areas. So, only you and your partner will be able to communicate with game characters, and the state of the world is controlled by Fallout 76 itself and changes according to your choice or as part of story events.
