BiglyBT became the first torrent client to support the BitTorrent V2 specification

The BiglyBT client has added full support for the BitTorrent v2 specification, including hybrid torrents. According to the developers, BitTorrent v2 has several benefits, some of which will be noticeable to users.

BiglyBT was released in the summer of 2017. The open source software was created by Parg and TuxPaper, who previously worked on Azureus and Vuze.

Now the developers have released a new version of BiglyBT. The latest release includes support for BitTorrent v2, making it the first torrent client to work with the new specification.

BitTorrent v2 is not yet known to the general public, but developers see potential in it. Basically, it is a new and improved BitTorrent specification that includes several technical changes. BitTorrent v2 was released in 2008.

A few weeks ago v2 support was officially added to the Libtorrent library used by popular clients including uTorrent Web, Deluge and qBittorrent.

One of the main differences with BitTorrent v2 is that it creates a new type of torrent format. The torrent hash sum includes the formation of a separate swarm (set of distribution peers) from v1. "Hybrid" torrent files are emerging, including information to create a v1 and v2 swarm.

β€œWe support both hybrid and version 2-only torrents, loading metadata from magnet links, and all existing features such as swarm detection and I2P,” BiglyBT said.

Various torrent formats provide additional benefits, for example for "swarm merge". The same file can be downloaded from different torrents found on demand. In this case, new files are matched based on sizes.

In BitTorrent v2 each file has its own hash. This allows you to pick up files automatically. At the moment, this feature has not yet been implemented, but the developers are thinking about implementing it. They can choose not to use the file size as a proxy.

The advantage for users is that when incorrect data is loaded or corrupted, a small amount of data must be discarded, and the culprit of the error or intentional intrusion is easily identified.

However, v2 is not yet supported by any torrent sites or publishers.
