BlackBerry Messenger has officially shut down

On May 31, 2019, the Indonesian company Emtek Group officially closed the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) messaging service and application for it. Note that this company has owned the rights to the system since 2016 and tried to revive it, but to no avail.

BlackBerry Messenger has officially shut down

“We put our hearts into making this [BBM] a reality and we are proud of what we have created to date. However, the technology industry is very fluid, so despite our considerable efforts, old users have migrated to other platforms, and new users have proven difficult to attract,” the developers said.

At the same time, the company opened its corporate messenger with built-in encryption BBM Enterprise (BBMe) for personal use. Application is available for Android, iOS, Windows and macOS.

True, it will be free only during the first year, and then the cost will be $ 2,5 for a six-month subscription. Considering that many messengers today offer encryption by default and for free, BBMe doesn't make much sense. Most likely, only ardent fans of BBM and, in fact, BlackBerry will choose a formal novelty.

At one time, in the early 2000s, the company was a "trendsetter" in terms of smartphones. Then BlackBerry was considered a top brand for businessmen and politicians. In particular, the smartphone of this manufacturer was used by Barack Obama, being the President of the United States. And in 2013, smartphones were approved by the US Department of Defense for their employees. In 2016, the company announced that it would no longer manufacture smartphones and would only focus on software development. The hardware was handed over to TCL.
