Blackmagic Design continues to bring literally tons of innovations to its advanced video editing suite DaVinci Resolve, which combines a set of tools for editing, visual effects and graphics, video color grading and sound processing in one application. A year ago, the company introduced the largest update under version 15, and now, as part of NAB-2019, it introduced a preview version of DaVinci Resolve 16.
This is another major update, the main innovation of which was the appearance of the Cut page. This innovation is designed for editing tasks where speed and deadlines are the main thing (for example, when working on commercials or news releases). The page brings together a range of innovative tools designed to greatly streamline your editing tasks. With their help, you can import and fit, add transitions and text, automatically align color, mix an audio track.
For example, a Source Tape mode has been added to view all clips as a single material, a fitting interface for displaying a border at the junction of two clips, as well as two timelines (the upper one for the entire material, and the lower one for the current fragment). Of course, if necessary, you can always switch to the familiar classic editing tools on the Edit page, even in the middle of the current project.
In addition, the package adds a new platform DaVinci Neural Engine, which uses the latest technologies based on neural networks, artificial intelligence and machine learning. It added features such as Speed ββWarp timing effects, Super Scale, auto alignment, color scheme, and face detection. Active use of GPU resources ensures high processing speed.
DaVinci Resolve 16 also introduces a number of more general new features. Single-tier clips are now easy to apply filters and color schemes, and projects can be quickly exported to services like YouTube and Vimeo. Special GPU-accelerated on-screen indicators provide even more options for checking image performance. In the Fairlight block, there was a waveform setting for correct synchronization of audio and video, support for three-dimensional sound, output of bus tracks, preview automation and speech processing.
DaVinci Resolve Studio 16 brings significant improvements to existing ResolveFX plugins and adds new ones. They allow you to use vignetting and shadows, analog noise, distortion and color aberration, remove objects in the movie and stylize the material. A number of other tools have also been optimized, including TV Line Simulation, Facial Smoothing, Background Fill, Reshaping, Dead Pixel Removal, and Color Space Transformation. In addition, keyframes for ResolveFX effects can be viewed and edited using curves on the Edit and Color pages.
You can also mention the direct import of materials at the click of a button; scalable interface for working on laptops; improved image stabilization on the Cut and Edit pages; convenient placement of entry and exit points using curves; reprocessing only changed frames to speed up rendering; improved performance when working with 3D on the Fusion page due to the GPU; support for GPU acceleration on any OS; acceleration of operations with masks; optimization of work with Camera Tracker and Planar Tracker tools; 500 free acoustic noises; sharing comments and markers within the same group and much more.
All in all, the latest version improves the performance of dozens of tools designed for professional editors, colorists, VFX specialists and sound engineers. DaVinci Resolve 16 Public Beta is now available for free download from the Blackmagic Design website for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It is worth noting that the DaVinci Neural Engine platform, 3D video tools, co-creation tools, dozens of ResolveFX and FairlightFX plug-ins, HDR material color correction, grain, blur and haze effects are only available in the paid version of the package - DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.
