Bloomberg: Apple will release a Mac on a proprietary ARM processor in 2021

Reports have reappeared on the Web about Apple working on the first Mac computer based on its own ARM chip. According to Bloomberg, the novelty will receive a 5-nm chip manufactured by TSMC, similar to the Apple A14 processor (but not similar). The latter, recall, will become the basis of the upcoming iPhone 12 series smartphones.

Bloomberg sources claim that Apple's ARM computer processor will receive eight high-performance cores and at least four energy-efficient ones. It is also assumed that the company is developing other versions of the processor with more than twelve cores.

According to Bloomberg, the 12-core ARM chip will be "much faster" than the A13 processor currently used in Apple's latest iPhones and iPads.

Bloomberg predicts that the new entry-level MacBook will be the first ARM-based device. The second generation of chips is reportedly already in the planning stage and will be based on the 2021 iPhone smartphone processor, tentatively named "A15".

This is far from the first report about the upcoming release of a Mac with an ARM processor. In particular, Bloomberg was one of the first resources to discuss this possibility in 2017. And in 2019, an Intel representative predicted the appearance of a Mac on an ARM chip as early as 2020.

In addition to improving performance and efficiency, moving away from Intel chips will also give Apple more control over the timing of Mac releases. In recent years, Intel has changed its chip roadmap several times, preventing Apple from updating its MacBook series as quickly as it needed to.
