BOE built a fingerprint scanner into the LCD display: we are waiting for the technology to appear in budget smartphones

If we are talking about a fingerprint scanner built into the display, then we mean that the type of this display is OLED, since this biometric authentication technology has so far only been compatible with such matrices due to their thinner thickness. However, Chinese screen maker BOE claims to have developed an optical fingerprint sensor that can be used with LCD panels that are prevalent in budget devices. According to Liu Xiaodong, vice president of the company, mass production of LCD displays with built-in fingerprint scanners will begin at the end of 2019.

Due to what technological solutions BOE was able to integrate a fingerprint sensor into the LCD panel, the top manager did not tell, but shared statistics on the prevalence of smartphones with screens in the entire front panel. According to his calculations, in 2017 their share was only 9%, in 2018 it rose to 65%, in 2019, according to forecasts, it will reach 81%, and in 2020 it will overcome the milestone of 90%. In quantitative terms, the level of sales of "full-screen" devices in 2019 is expected to be at the level of 1,26 billion units, and in 2020 1,46 billion units will be sold.

As for displays with a built-in fingerprint scanner, according to IHS Markit statistics, as of the end of 2018, 18 smartphone models were equipped with such solutions. At the same time, the volume of deliveries of matrices with integrated fingerprint sensors amounted to 30 million pieces per year. In 2019, this figure, according to forecasts, should grow six times, to 180 million units.
