Brave Browser Caught Substituting Referral Links When Going To Certain URLs

The Internet browser Brave Browser, which is a Chromium-based product, was caught by users of substituting referral links when going to certain sites. For example, a referral code is added to the link when you go to “binance.us”, turning the original link into “binance.us/en?ref=35089877”.

The browser behaves similarly when navigating to some other cryptocurrency-related sites. According to available data, the referral link is inserted when going to resources such as Coinbase, Trezor and Ledger. This feature is enabled by default for all Brave users. You can disable it by going to the corresponding menu brave://settings/appearance.

Brave developers do not hide that the company makes money through various affiliate programs. However, this practice of automatically substituting referral links can negatively affect the reputation of the browser, since users are not warned about this.

Brave co-founder Brendan Eich, commenting on this issue, wrote on his Twitter account that the browser should not substitute any add-ons when navigating to a user-specified URL. “Sorry for this mistake - we are clearly not perfect, but we will quickly correct course,” Mr. Ike said.

According to available data, at the moment the developers have already found a solution to the problem with substituting referral links. To achieve this, the feature responsible for inserting links was disabled by default, whereas previously it was enabled for all Brave users.
