Kiwi Browser for Android Supports Google Chrome Extensions

The Kiwi mobile browser is not yet well known among Android users, but it has some interesting aspects that are worth discussing. The browser was launched about a year ago, it is based on the open source Google Chromium project, but it includes interesting features.

Kiwi Browser for Android Supports Google Chrome Extensions

In particular, it is equipped by default with a built-in ad and notification blocker, a night mode function, and background playback support for YouTube and other services. And the latest version of Kiwi provides support for Google Chrome extensions. This is something that even the official Google Chrome app for Android lacks, not to mention other analogues.

It's important to note that not every Chrome extension will work. If it's strictly x86 bound, it probably won't run. But many extensions that change the behavior of the browser or the websites the user visits should work.

For now, you will have to use "manual mode" to activate extensions. The algorithm looks like this:

  • Enable developer mode, for this you need to enter chrome://extensions in the address bar and go to the address.
  • Switch to desktop mode.
  • Go to the Chrome Extensions Store.
  • Find the desired extension and then install it as usual.

If for some reason you don't want to enable desktop mode, you can also download extensions in .CRX format. After that, you need to change the name to .ZIP, unpack the archive into a folder, and then use the "load unpacked extension" option in Kiwi. It's inconvenient, but it might be useful for someone.

The program can be downloaded from the store XDA or from Google Play. At the same time, we note that this is not the first such browser. The mobile version of Firefox for Android has long supported many of the extensions that work with the desktop version.
