Mozilla Firefox browser will lose support for the FTP protocol

Developers from Mozilla announced their intention to remove FTP support from their Firefox browser. This means that in the future, users of the popular Internet browser will not be able to upload files and view the contents of any resources via FTP.

Mozilla Firefox browser will lose support for the FTP protocol

β€œWe do this for security reasons. FTP is an insecure protocol and there is no reason to make it a better choice for file uploads than HTTPS. Also, some of the FTP code is very old, insecure, and quite difficult to maintain. In the past, we were able to find a lot of vulnerabilities in this code, ”Michal Novotny, software engineer at Mozilla Corporation, commented on this issue.

According to reports, Mozilla will remove FTP support from its browser with the release of Firefox 77, which should happen in June this year. It is worth noting that users will still be able to upload files via FTP. To do this, they will have to independently enable protocol support in the browser settings menu, which opens if you enter about:config in the address bar. But in the future, developers will completely remove FTP support from the browser. This is expected to happen in the first half of 2021. After that, Firefox users will not be able to use the FTP protocol.

It is worth noting that earlier the intention to get rid of support for the FTP protocol was announced by the developers of the Chrome browser. Representatives of Google reported this back in August last year. FTP support will be disabled by default in Chrome 81, the release of which delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak, and in the next version after that, the browser will completely stop supporting FTP.
