The Honor brand came out on top in the Russian smartphone market, ahead of Samsung

Owned by the Chinese company Huawei, the Honor brand came out in the first quarter of 2019 in first place in the Russian smartphone market in unit sales with a share of 27,1%. This was reported by the Kommersant newspaper, citing a GfK study.

The new leader displaced Samsung (26,5%) to second place, Apple remained in third place (11%), Huawei and Xiaomi took fourth and fifth places with a market share of 9,2 and 6,1%, respectively.

The leadership of the Honor brand in the first quarter of 2019, which debuted in first position with a market share of more than 25% and outstripped Samsung, was confirmed both in the M.Video-Eldorado group and in the united company Svyaznoy-Euroset.

Vladimir Chaika, head of the Mobile Equipment Department at M.Video-Eldorado, noted such brand qualities as prices, assortment, logistics and marketing support that are most adapted to the Russian market, and David Borzilov, sales vice president of Svyaznoy-Euroset, as the main growth driver of Honor is that the brand began to work successfully with large retailers.

Although the smartphone market was previously reported to have fallen by more than 30% for the first time since 2015, according to its participants, retailer data suggests otherwise - in the first quarter there was growth.

According to M.Video-Eldorado estimates, the sales of smartphones in Russia in the first quarter of 2019 grew by 8% in quantitative terms and by 18% in money terms, to 6,8 million units and 112,8 billion rubles. Compared to last year, the average price of a smartphone increased by 9% to 16,5 thousand rubles.

According to Svyaznoy, during the reporting period, Russians purchased 6,7 million smartphones, spending 107 billion rubles on this. In turn, MTS sold 6,5 million smartphones in the first quarter for the amount of 106 billion rubles, which is 4% more in physical terms than the same period last year, and 11% more in monetary terms.
