Britain has gone on record saying that China's Huawei has failed to adequately patch security holes in telecommunications equipment used on the country's cellular networks. It was noted that the "national scale" vulnerability was discovered in 2019, but it was fixed before it became known that it was possible to use it.
The assessment was made by a supervisory board chaired by a member of the GCHQ Government Communications Centre. The report states that GCHQ's National Cyber ββSecurity Center (NCSC) found no evidence that Huawei has changed its approach to this issue. Although the company has made some improvements to the equipment, there is reason to believe that these measures do not completely solve the problem. As a result, it was said that long-term risks to UK national security could not be ruled out.
The report added that the number of vulnerabilities discovered in 2019 "significantly exceeds" the number discovered in 2018. This is reported to be due in part to increased efficiency in inspections rather than a general lowering of standards. Recall that in July the British government announced that it would phase out Huawei equipment for 5G networks until 2027. However, Chinese hardware is likely to remain in legacy mobile and fixed broadband networks. The US claims that the use of Huawei equipment poses a risk that the Chinese authorities could use it for espionage and sabotage, which the company has always denied.
Despite criticism, British intelligence officials say they can handle the current risks associated with the use of Huawei equipment and do not believe that the detected defects were intentional. Although the company's prospects in the UK are limited, it still hopes to ship its 5G equipment to other European countries.
