The impact of the pandemic on various sectors of the economy can hardly be called unambiguous, since even within the same sector, multidirectional trends can be observed. Qualcomm suffered in the second quarter from a delay in the announcement of new iPhones, which is why Broadcom broke out in first place in terms of revenue, even taking into account its decline.
The statistics for the second quarter were summarized by the research agency
The authors of the study argue that Qualcomm led a shifted cycle of preparation for the announcement of new iPhone models, which did not allow the company to increase revenue in the second quarter. This allowed Broadcom to unwittingly seize the initiative in the quest for leadership among integrated circuit developers in terms of revenue.
NVIDIA demonstrated impressive revenue growth dynamics, which increased it by 47,1% over the year. The accession of Mellanox contributed to this to a large extent, although NVIDIA's own progress in this direction cannot be denied. AMD in terms of revenue growth took second place after NVIDIA, increasing the corresponding figure by 26,2% compared to last year, but this did not allow it to move above the fifth position in the top ten developers.
In sixth place was Xilinx, which produces programmable matrices that are used in telecommunications equipment. The latter, as is easy to understand, was in demand during the period of self-isolation, but revenue in this area decreased by 33,2% due to supply problems. The problem was exacerbated by a drop in demand in the automotive market, which led to a decrease in Xilinx's consolidated revenue by 14,5%. For the first time in its history, the company faced a double-digit decline in revenue.
Taiwanese company MediaTek, ranked fourth, posted a 14,2% increase in revenue, driven by the growing popularity of smartphones based on its processors. Most likely, in the future, US sanctions against Huawei will allow MediaTek to strengthen its market position. In the third quarter, according to TrendForce experts, high demand for components will be dictated by the preservation of self-isolation, distance education and remote work. The development of 5G networks and related infrastructure will be an additional incentive for the growth of revenue for component developers.
