Ex-Tesla employee copied Autopilot source code to his iCloud account

In the US, Tesla's lawsuit continues against its former employee Guangzhi Cao, accused of stealing intellectual property for a new employer.

According to court documents released this week, Cao admitted to downloading zip files containing the Autopilot software source code to his personal iCloud account in late 2018. During this time, he was still working for an American company. However, Guangzhi Cao denies that his actions constitute theft of trade secrets.

Earlier this year, Tesla sued Cao for stealing autopilot-related trade secrets and passing them on to Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaopeng Motors, also known as Xmotors or XPeng. The company is backed by tech giant Alibaba.

Currently, according to his LinkedIn profile, Cao works at XPeng, where he is "developing autonomous driving technology for automotive manufacturing."

In a statement to The Verge earlier this year, XPeng said it had launched an internal investigation into Tesla's allegations and that it "fully respects the intellectual property rights and confidential information of any third party." XPeng states that it "did not in any way encourage or attempt to compel Mr. Cao to appropriate Tesla's trade secrets, confidential and proprietary information, whether such allegations by Tesla are true or not", and that it "did not know of any or Mr. Cao's alleged misdeeds."
