Canon unveils EOS R5, its most advanced mirrorless camera with advanced autofocus and 8K video

We've known for a long timethat the EOS R5 is preparing to hit the market, but today the day has come: Canon has officially unveiled the camera. The most noteworthy features of this new R5 full-frame mirrorless camera are a new sensor, built-in image stabilization and 8K video capture. All this suggests that the Japanese company has not just released a new camera, but is doing everything so that the device really surpasses its predecessor.

So, the R5 uses Canon's brand new full-frame 45-megapixel sensor (8192 Γ— 5464 dots), designed to work in conjunction with the DIGIC X processor previously used in the EOS-1D X III. This combination provides the fast reading and processing required to implement many of the R5's advanced features.

The DSLR-style design features a large 0,76x 5,76 million-dot electronic viewfinder and a 2,1-megapixel flip-out LCD. The EOS R's M-Fn pad is gone, replaced with a regular joystick and AF-On button. Build quality is similar to the EOS 5D IV, meaning it's rugged and weatherproof, though not up to 1D standards. The camera is equipped with a USB-C connector (USB 3.1 Gen2 standard), as well as slots for CFexpress and SD memory cards.

Some of the R5's key features include a built-in Image Stabilizer that can reduce jitter by up to eight stops when paired with select RF lenses. The camera uses a second-generation Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system that provides 100 percent frame coverage and 1053 auto-selected points. Thanks to machine learning, the camera is able to detect and track both people and animals.

The R5 supports continuous shooting at 20 fps with continuous focus using the electronic shutter, and 12 fps with the mechanical shutter. The buffer is enough for this, especially when using high-speed CFexpress memory cards. The camera can save, in addition to regular photos in RAW and JPEG format, also files in 10-bit HEIF format with loss of quality.

But especially the new camera will please videographers. It is capable of recording 8K video at 30 fps for 30 minutes in both H.265 and Raw formats. The camera can also capture 4K/120p video stream. Recording in 10-bit 4:2:2 format using C-Log or HDR PQ is supported. As you'd expect, microphone and headphone jacks are available.

The EOS R5 has dual-band (2,4GHz and 5GHz) built-in Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth. The camera can transfer images via FTP/SFTP as you shoot.

The battery provides 320 shots per charge using the LCD, or 220 shots when using the EVF at 120Hz (60 shots when using the standard 330Hz). If more battery life is needed, Canon offers the BG-R10 holder for $349, which doubles the battery life. Also available for $999 is a Wireless File Transmitter holder that adds an Ethernet jack and improved multi-camera shooting.

The EOS R5 will hit the market at the end of July for $3899 for the body, or $4999 for a kit with the RF 24-105mm F4L lens.
