CD Projekt on next game, 'very important' E3 2019 and possible port of Cyberpunk 2077 to new consoles

At today's conference dedicated to the results of activities in 2018, the Polish company CD Projekt RED announced mobile versions of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, and also confirmed that it is working on a new big-budget project. Its release should take place before 2021. In addition, the developers noted that they will release the Cyberpunk 2077 role-playing game on next-gen consoles if they have the opportunity.

Responding to a question from one of those present, CD Projekt Red president Adam KiciΕ„ski said work on the mystery game had already begun. The team is significantly smaller than the one working on Cyberpunk 2077, and so far much less money has been invested in it. However, the creators want it to exceed the expectations of gamers, so the quality requirements are the highest. He also assured that the authors will not follow current trends.

The head of the studio did not specify whether the game is based on new intellectual property, but said that this is not a port of one of the existing ones. The developers have repeatedly spoken about the desire to return to The Witcher series, but it is not known if this project is connected with it. Kichinski asked reporters to refrain from any speculation about what she might be. It's "too early" to discuss the details - CD Projekt RED is focused on creating and promoting Cyberpunk 2077. After the release of the cyberpunk RPG, the team will "naturally" move on to developing new projects - the authors already have ideas for several games.

The fact that the company is working not only on Cyberpunk 2077, but also on another big game (although at that time it may have been only plans), CD Projekt RED announced three years ago in one of the financial reports. Then it was called RPG, but now the studio does not even say anything about its genre.

In addition, the head noted that the studio would like to release Cyberpunk 2077 not only on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but also on next-generation systems (according to rumors, they will start in 2020). The developers talked about this last year, but they are still not sure whether it will be possible to do this. β€œIf we had the opportunity to bring Cyberpunk 2077 to the next generation of consoles, we would probably take it,” he said, emphasizing that the RED Engine was designed with consoles that have not yet been released.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be shown at E3 2019. According to the leaders, the current Los Angeles event will be β€œvery important” for the studio - no less than last year (which premiered RPG gameplay behind closed doors). Kicinski noted that she has "a few surprises" in store for the show, but they are not related to the appearance of a popular artist (probably such a question was asked in connection with recent rumors about the participation of Lady Gaga in the creation of the game). Perhaps in June at least the approximate release dates will become known. According to Poles, the total audience of the Cyberpunk 2077 advertising campaign (YouTube and Twitch subscribers) has already exceeded 250 million people.

CD Projekt RED made a significant profit in 2018 from sales of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – it was bought quite willingly even three years after its release. In total, the company spent over PLN 100 million ($26,2 million) last year on game and technology development. The scale of the company continues to grow: an office in Warsaw was recently opened, which will increase the total number of employees by 250-300 people.
