Alienware, in a bid to innovate in the gaming market, showed off the Concept UFO at CES 2020, a device apparently inspired by the Nintendo Switch. We are talking about a portable game machine with two controllers that can be detached from the main device, similar to the Joy-Con from Nintendo.
Alienware and its parent company Dell haven't given a specific release date, specs, pricing, or even a definite market launch for the concept. It is only reported that the heart of the device is the AMD Ryzen processor - probably with integrated graphics due to the compactness of the device, by the standards of laptops, of course. Even against the backdrop of Switch, this device looks bulky. Attention is also drawn to the ventilation grilles at the back - no matter how the fan hides there. Well, it is impossible not to notice a pronounced optical illusion, deliberately created by the irregular shape of the frames around the screen.
The computer is equipped with an 8-inch screen - this is more than the Switch, whose display is only 6,2 "diagonal. The included controllers are detachable and match the style of the Joy-Con. Other similarities between this device and the Nintendo console include the fact that the solution can be connected to an external display to run games on a large screen, but if you want to use the built-in display, there is a retractable stand.
Among the differences from the Switch, one can mention the fact that the controllers are not independent devices and, when detached from the screen, are designed to be connected to a special bridge with a battery, forming a large gamepad. And the design of the device as a whole is different. Of course, the main difference is the software. In this case, we are talking about a portable PC that offers to run games from Steam, Origin, Epic Games and other digital stores from the common Alienware interface.
Based on the demo, the computer runs games like Mortal Kombat 11, Rocket League, or F1 2019 smoothly, without interruptions or screen tearing. There are a number of key questions regarding the Concept UFO, the main ones being battery life, exact specs, price, and likely to hit the market.
