CGI remake of 1973 classic Robin Hood to be exclusive to Disney+

It looks like Disney's ambitions for its streaming service are growing fast. The company has announced that the classic 1973 Robin Hood cartoon will receive a remake created using photorealistic computer animation in the vein of 2019's The Lion King or 2016's The Jungle Book. But, unlike previous examples, this project will bypass cinemas and immediately debut on the Disney + service.

Reportedly, the characters in the new "Robin Hood" will be anthropomorphic, and the picture will actively combine live shooting and computer graphics. It will still be a musical. The original version depicted the noble thief of Sherwood Forest as a fox, and his gang of associates as other animals. Little John was a bear, the Sheriff of Nottingham was a wolf, Father Took was a badger, and Prince John was a crowned lion.

Carlos LΓ³pez Estrada, best known for directing Blindspots in 2018, will take on this remake of the classic. Kari Granlund, who wrote the screenplay for Disney's recent remake of Lady and the Tramp, has been brought in as writer. It's unclear when Disney wants to start production, but it's not possible right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Robin Hood is not the first movie to be a Disney+ exclusive. For example, the Lady and the Tramp project also passed cinemas in November 2019. It's possible that films that don't potentially bring in too much theater revenue (The Lion King and Aladdin each grossed over $1 billion at the box office) are more likely to become streaming exclusives. They add to the service's library and give subscribers a reason to keep paying.

By the way, Artemis Fowl, which was originally supposed to hit theaters, will debut on Disney+ as an exclusive. Chairman of the Board of Directors and former chief executive of the company Bob Iger said that more films could become Disney Plus exclusives. With cinemas closed and the explosive growth of the streaming service this is not particularly surprising.

Disney + is growing by leaps and bounds: the company recently announced that the number of paid subscribers has already exceeded 50 million thanks to the launch in the UK, India, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland. Even though the launch of Disney+ was arrested in France for two weeks due to government concerns about excessive network load, the application is now available there as well.
