Check Point: Coronavirus attacks up 30%

An analysis of the attacks showed that they were all carried out from fake domains that imitated the web sites of international organizations, as well as the website of the Zoom communication platform. In addition, cases of mass mailing of phishing emails on behalf of Microsoft Teams and Google Meet services have been recorded.

Since the beginning of May, almost 20 thousand new domains related to the topic of coronavirus have been registered, of which 2% are malicious and another 15% are suspicious. Since the outbreak began, a total of 90 thousand new domain names related to COVID-19 have been registered worldwide.

“Over the past three weeks, we have noticed a change in the trend of counterfeit domains. To make the most of the current situation, hackers resort to risky methods. If we analyze the latest cyber attacks, there is a clear trend to imitate the domains of reputable organizations or popular applications. For example, recently there have been active attacks on behalf of the WHO, the UN or Zoom. Today, it is especially important to be vigilant and beware of suspicious domains and senders when it comes to email campaigns,” says Check Point Software Technologies.
