The number of domains appearing in Google block requests has reached 4 million

A new frontier has been marked in the requests that Google receives to block pages from search results that violate someone else's intellectual property. Blocking is done in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and with public disclosure of information on requests for public scrutiny.

According to published statistics, the number of unique second-level domains mentioned in the requirements for the removal of information from search results exceeded 4 million. The total number of URLs reported for removal is approaching 6 billion. The applications mention 317 copyright holders and 321 organizations on behalf of which applications are submitted. The largest number of blocks affect the sites 4shared.com (68 million), mp3toys.xyz (51 million), rapidgator.net (42 million), chomikuj.pl (34 million), uploaded.net (28 million), new-rutor.org (27 million).

Since in many cases applications are sent based on automated analysis, there are often incidents related to the requirement to remove legal content. For example, more than 700 applications require removal of links to materials from Google.com itself, 5564 applications require removal of links to materials from the IMDb.com rating, and 3492 applications require links to articles from Wikipedia. 22 applications indicate violations on the FBI website, 17 - on the White House website, two - on the website of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), three - on the Vatican website. Usually Google detects such errors and they do not lead to the actual exclusion of pages from search results.

Of the curious situations, one can also note the addition of Warner Bros's own website to the block list, attempts to block torrents from OpenOffice and iso images of Ubuntu 8.10 by Microsoft, blocking IRC logs and discussions in the Ubuntu and Fedora mailing lists under the pretext of unlicensed distribution of the movie "2: 22", as well as reports from the Ubuntu continuous integration system under the pretext of unlicensed distribution of the film "Result".
