Cisco launches Wi-Fi 6 hardware

Cisco Systems announced on Monday the start of the implementation of hardware with support for next-generation Wi-Fi standards.

In particular, the company announced new access points and switches for enterprises with support for Wi-Fi 6, a new standard that is expected to be rolled out by 2022. Phones, laptops, and other Wi-Fi 6-enabled devices can connect to Cisco access points on corporate campuses and pass traffic to switches to be sent over a wired network.

In fact, Cisco is joining many companies that are upgrading their hardware with new chips based on the 802.11ax Wi-Fi networking standard. Wi-Fi 6 routers deliver four times the performance of Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) routers.

Wi-Fi 6 will provide a significant increase in overall network throughput and reliability, as well as increase the speed, performance and capacity of wireless networks in both homes and businesses. Cisco noted that the rollout of the Internet of Things (IoT) means we will have billions of devices connected to the Internet going forward, and the network infrastructure must keep up with the times.

Cisco Meraki and Catalyst Next Generation Access Points and Catalyst 9600 Switches are now available for pre-order. Before launching Wi-Fi 6-enabled access points, Cisco tested their compatibility with Broadcom, Intel, and Samsung to eliminate the inevitable problems associated with using the new standard. Samsung, Boingo, GlobalReach, Presidio and others are expected to join the Cisco OpenRoaming project to solve one of the biggest wireless access problems. The aim of this project is to facilitate seamless and secure switching between mobile and Wi-Fi networks.
