CuteFish - new desktop environment

The developers of the CuteFishOS Linux distribution, based on the Debian package base, are developing a new CuteFish user environment that resembles macOS in style. JingOS is mentioned as a friendly project, which has an interface similar to CuteFish, but optimized for tablets. The developments of the project are written in C++ using Qt and KDE Frameworks libraries. The code is distributed under the GPLv3 license. The installation builds of the CuteFishOS distribution are not ready yet, but the environment can already be tested using packages for Arch Linux or by installing an alternative build - Manjaro Сutefish.

To develop user environment components, the fishui library is used with the implementation of an add-on for the Qt Quick Controls 2 widget set. Light and dark themes, borderless windows, shadows under windows, blurring the contents of background windows, the global menu and Qt Quick Control styles are supported. To manage windows, the KWin composite manager with a set of additional plug-ins is used.

The project develops its own taskbar, a full-screen interface for launching applications (launcher) and a top panel with a global menu, widgets and a system tray. Among the applications developed by the project participants are a file manager, a calculator and a configurator.

The CuteFish desktop and the CuteFishOS distribution are designed primarily with first-time users in mind, for whom it is more important to provide a set of settings and applications that allow them to get started right away than to be able to deeply customize the system to their preferences.
