At the developer meeting in Cambridge, the issue of deprecating 32-bit support in stages was discussed. During the interim phase, the 32-bit repository is planned to be maintained, and during the final phase, support for it will be discontinued. If the plan is approved, the changes will be visible in the release. Debian 13.
The developers plan to gradually phase out 32-bit kernels and installers. Support for i386 will continue as an additional architecture on amd64-based systems (multi-arch), and the i386 subsystem will continue to run in chroot. This applies only to x86: Debian continues to support other 32-bit architectures, including Arm and MIPS.
To date, the following distributions have officially retained 32-bit support:
- Alt Linux
- Gentoo
- Slackware
