Tenth Platform ALT

ALT Platform Ten (p10), a new stable branch of ALT repositories based on the Sisyphus free software repository, has been released. The platform is designed to develop, test, distribute, update and support complex solutions of all levels - from embedded devices to enterprise servers and data centers; created and developed by the ALT Linux Team, supported by Basalt SPO.

ALT p10 contains package repositories and infrastructure to work with eight architectures:

  • five main ones (synchronous build, open repositories): 64-bit x86_64, aarch64 (ARMv8), ppc64le (Power8/9) and 32-bit i586 and armh (armv7hf);
  • three closed ones (separate assembly, images and repositories are available to equipment owners on request): e2k (Elbrus-4Π‘), e2kv4 (Elbrus-8Π‘/1Π‘+), e2kv5 (Elbrus-8Π‘Π’).

For the 32-bit mipsel architecture, the p10 branch is not created, support in p9 is carried out within the stated time frame. For e2k architectures, a branching variant for p10_e2k is scheduled for September 2021. In mid-2022, it is planned to separate the p10 branch for the riscv64 architecture. Assembly for all architectures is done natively, without cross-compilation.

The tenth platform provides users and developers with the opportunity to use Russian Baikal-M, Elbrus, Elvis and compatible systems, a wide range of equipment from world manufacturers, including powerful POWER8 / 9 servers manufactured by IBM / Yadro, ARMv8 manufactured by Huawei, as well as a variety of single-board ARMv7 and ARMv8, including the common Raspberry Pi 2/3/4.

Particular attention is paid to free solutions that allow corporate users to migrate from proprietary infrastructure, ensure the continuity of a single directory service for enterprises and organizations, and provide remote work using modern means.

What's new

  • Real-time kernels: Two real-time Linux kernels have been compiled for the x86_64 architecture: Xenomai and Real Time Linux (PREEMPT_RT).
  • OpenUDS VDI: A multi-platform connection broker for creating and managing virtual desktops and applications. A VDI user selects a template through a browser and, using a client (RDP, X2Go), connects to his desktop on a terminal server or in a virtual machine in the OpenNebula cloud.
  • Group Policy Set Extension: Supports gsettings to control MATE and Xfce desktop environments.
  • Active Directory Administrative Center: admc is a graphical application for managing AD users, groups, and group policies, similar to RSAT under Windows.
  • An extension of the deploy platform, designed to deploy and configure roles (for example, PostgreSQL or Moodle). Added the following roles: apache, mariadb, mediawiki, moodle, nextcloud; at the same time, for the mediawiki, moodle and nextcloud roles, you can change the administrator password without worrying about the internal implementation in a particular web application.
  • Added alterator-multiseat - multi-terminal configuration module.
  • Support for devices based on Baikal-M processors - tf307-mb boards based on the Baikal-M processor (BE-M1000) with SD and MB-A0 revisions with SDK-M-5.2, as well as Lagrange LGB-01B (mini-ITX) boards.

See the wiki and pkgs.org for more information on versions; in August 2021, you can also focus on Repology and DistroWatch data on Sisyphus. The composition and versions of other packages can also be viewed at packages.altlinux.org. For catching-up architectures, the availability and versions of packages may differ.

Update

Upgrading from versions 9.x of commercial products will be possible under the contract after the release of versions 10.0 of the respective products. Before upgrading to the Tenth platform of a previously installed system, be sure to read the description. We recommend that you carry out a mass update strictly after a successful trial check.

Starter kits and templates are available for various architectures and containerization/cloud systems (dockerhub, linuxcontainers); new distribution products for various categories of users are expected in autumn 2021.
