Ninth Platform ALT

Submitted by issue Ninth platform (p9) - a new stable branch of ALT repositories based on the free software repository Sisyphus (Sisyphus). The platform is designed to develop, test, distribute, update and support a wide range of complex solutions - from embedded devices to enterprise servers and data centers; created and developed by the team ALT Linux Team, supported by the company "Basalt SPO".

ALT p9 contains package repositories and infrastructure for working with eight architectures:

  • four main ones (synchronous assembly, open repositories): x86_64, i586, aarch64 (ARMv8), ppc64le (Power8/9);
  • two additional ones (catch-up build, open repositories): mipsel (32-bit MIPS), armh (ARMv7);
  • two closed ones (separate assembly, images and repositories are available to equipment owners on request): e2k (Elbrus-4C), e2kv4 (Elbrus-8C / 1C +).

    Assembly for all architectures is done exclusively natively; images for ARM/MIPS also include options for running in QEMU. List of architecture dependent packages for e2k available along with information on regular branches. Since 2018, the rv64gc (riscv64) architecture has been supported in the unstable Sisyphus repository, which will be added to p9 after the appearance of user systems on it.

    The ninth platform provides users and developers with the opportunity to use Russian Elbrus, Tavolga, Yadro, Elvis and compatible systems, a wide range of equipment from world manufacturers, including powerful Huawei ARMv8 servers and a variety of single-board ARMv7 and ARMv8 systems (for example, nVidia Jetson Nano, Raspberry Pi 2/3 and Allwinner-based ones like Orange Pi Prime; RPi4 work in progress).

    The main version of the Linux kernel (std-def) at the time of release is 4.19.66; a newer kernel (un-def) 5.2.9 is also available. A significant difference from p8 is the transition of the RPM package manager to version 4.13 as the basis (previously a deep fork of version 4.0.4 was used); among other things, this gives support for rpmlib(FileDigests), which was previously lacking in many third-party packages like Chrome, and the GNOME App Center for the struggling store.

    Added support domestic cryptoalgorithms using openssl-gost-engine; a new gostsum package has also appeared, which allows you to calculate the checksum according to the GOST R 34.11-2012 algorithm.

    Considerable attention is paid to infrastructure free solutions, including a unified Samba build suitable for deploying both file services and a domain controller Active Directory.

    Docker images for aarch64, i586, ppc64le and x86_64 architectures are available at hub.docker.com; images for LXC/LXD - on images.linuxcontainers.org.

    For a quick start with the Ninth Platform, Basalt SPO offers users who prefer to independently determine the composition and design of the system, boot images of entry kits (starter kits) for supported architectures.

    Also available are beta versions of Alt distributions on the Ninth platform - Workstation (regular and K), Server, Education; Release 9.0 is scheduled for Fall 2019. Also, work is underway on Simply Linux 9 and a new distribution kit - Alt Virtualization Server. Basalt SPO invites all developers to joint testing to ensure compatibility with the Ninth ALT Platform.
