Digital Foundry on the first episode of the Final Fantasy VII remake: "Great, but not flawless"

Graphics experts from Digital Foundry have released a video analyzing the technical features of the first episode of the Final Fantasy VII remake. In short, everything is very good, but again there were problems.

Since within 12 months the game will only be on PS4; only versions for the base model of the console and PlayStation 4 Pro were available for analysis. On both consoles, Final Fantasy VII runs at a stable 30 fps.

PS4 Pro uses dynamic resolution, ranging from 1368p in particularly busy combat scenes to 1620p in most cases. On a regular PS4, the game sticks to 1080p - moments of changing resolution are extremely rare and unnoticeable.

As for image quality, Digital Foundry specialists were left with mixed impressions. On the one hand, the game makes smart use of the Unreal Engine 4 in general and the technology of blurring objects in particular.

On the other hand, outside the first, superbly designed location, low-resolution textures are observed. Digital Foundry cannot figure out whether this is a bug or a consequence of technical/financial limitations.

Other objects become overgrown with high-quality textures, but only after a couple of seconds. It also happens that objects appear out of thin air right before the player’s eyes. The problem is present on all PS4 models.

The first of several episodes of the remastered version of Final Fantasy VII will go on sale on April 10 for PS4. Critics praised the remake worse than the original, but noted the courage of the developers in changing the canon of the game.
