Digitimes Research: April Notebook Shipments Down 14%

According to research firm Digitimes Research, total notebook shipments from the top five brands fell 14% in April from the previous month. At the same time, the April 2019 figure was better than the results of the same month last year, analysts say. This is primarily due to the growth in demand for Chromebooks in the educational sector in North America and the renewal of the computer park of enterprises in Europe and Asia.

In many ways, it was Chrome OS laptops that helped Lenovo become the largest laptop supplier in April 2019, overtaking Hewlett-Packard. The latter lost about 40% of the volume of shipments compared to March, which was the worst result among the Top 5 manufacturers. Experts attribute this mainly to competitive pressure from other manufacturers of portable PCs in the corporate segment. Dell, like Lenovo, was able to bail out with Chromebooks. It was not without a negative result, but the drop in supplies was only 1%.

As for laptop ODM vendors, the top three of Wistron, Compal and Quanta also failed to stay in the supply growth zone, demonstrating a collective decline of 11% in April. At the same time, Wistron had the smallest decline - minus 4% on a monthly basis, and Compal was able to increase its lead over Quanta by receiving more orders from Lenovo.
