Dieselgate in the US will cost Daimler almost $ 3 billion

German automaker Daimler said on Thursday it had reached an agreement to settle US regulatory investigations and lawsuits by vehicle owners.

Dieselgate in the US will cost Daimler almost $ 3 billion

The scandal that arose in connection with the installation of software in cars to falsify tests of diesel engines for emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere will cost Daimler nearly $ 3 billion.

The settlement primarily addresses civil and environmental claims relating to 250 diesel cars and trucks sold in the United States under Daimler-owned brands, including claims from the Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Justice, California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the California Attorney General's Office.

The automaker estimates that it will cost $1,5 billion in settlements with the US authorities, and payments to private car owners could reach about $700 million more. In addition, the concern will face β€œfurther costs in the range of several hundred euros to comply with the settlement requirements.” In a word, if Daimler keeps within $3 billion, it will be not bad.

Diesel vehicles have come under scrutiny in the United States after Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to installing software to falsify emissions tests in 580 vehicles sold in the country. As it turned out, the rate of carbon dioxide emissions in these cars was 40 times higher than the legal norms. In total, Volkswagen has agreed to pay more than $25 billion in U.S. claims from owners, environmental regulators, states and dealers. In addition, the company stopped selling diesel cars in the country.
