Chrome is developing a resource-intensive ad blocking mode

For Chrome web browser develops a new mode of blocking ads that consume too much system and network resources. It is proposed to automatically unload iframes with ads if the code executed in them consumes more than 0.1% of the available bandwidth and 0.1% of the CPU time (total and per minute). In absolute terms, the limit is set at 4 MB of traffic and 60 seconds of CPU time. If the specified resources are exceeded, it is planned to replace the iframe with a page with the error text.

If approved, the proposed mode will be able to supplement the regular mechanism for blocking inappropriate ads, the activation of which scheduled on July 9th. In accordance with the previously announced plan, next week Chrome will begin blocking ad units that interfere with the perception of content and do not meet the criteria developed by Advertising Improvement Coalition. If ad units are found on any site that meet the criteria for inappropriate advertising, all ads will be blocked on these sites (blocking at the level of all ads on the site, and not screening out specific problematic blocks).

Key Species invalid ad units, which are subject to blocking when viewed on desktop systems:

  • Pop-up blocks overlapping content;
  • Video ads that automatically play with sound;
  • Ads with seconds to close counter, displayed before content is loaded;
  • Very large sticky blocks (970x250 or 580x400) that keep their position when scrolling.

When viewed on mobile systems:

  • Pop-up ads over content;
  • Pinned ad units that do not move when scrolling;
  • Ad units with a counter, shown before showing the main content or after an attempt to leave the page;
  • Annoying ads (blinking background, aggressive color changes);
  • Ad units occupying more than 30% of the screen space;
  • Full screen advertising;
  • Autoplay video ads with sound.
