New mailing list service launched for Linux kernel development

The team responsible for maintaining the infrastructure for developing the Linux kernel has announced the launch of a new mailing list service, lists.linux.dev. In addition to traditional mailing lists for Linux kernel developers, the server allows the creation of mailing lists for other projects with domains other than kernel.org.

All mailing lists maintained on vger.kernel.org will be migrated to the new server, with all addresses, subscribers and IDs retained. Due to the termination of maintenance of the majordomo mailing list server, the new server uses its own engine. In general, everything will remain as before, only the message headers will be slightly changed and the subscription and unsubscribe procedures will be reworked. In particular, instead of a general address for all mailings, a separate address for subscription/unsubscription will be offered for each mailing.

The new service will solve problems with the loss of messages that have been observed recently on vger.kernel.org (for example, some messages were lost and did not end up in the web archives lore.kernel.org or lkml.org). The relevance of the web archive is planned to be increased by prioritizing the sending of new messages to lore.kernel.org. The server will also be compatible with the DMARC mechanism to improve the quality of message delivery to recipients.
