AMD's share in the processor market was able to exceed 13%

According to the authoritative analytical company Mercury Research, in the first quarter of 2019, AMD continued to increase its share in the processor market. However, despite the fact that this growth continues for the sixth quarter in a row, in absolute terms, it still cannot boast of really significant success due to the large inertia of the market.

During a recent quarterly report, AMD CEO Lisa Su (Lisa Su) emphasized that the growth in profits entrusted to her company from sales of processors is due to both an increase in their average price, and thanks to an increase in sales volumes. In comments to the report made by research firm Camp Marketing, it was noted that quarterly shipments of desktop Ryzen 7 increased by 51% compared to the same period last year, six-core Ryzen 5 - by 30%, and quad-core Ryzen 5 - by 10%. Besides, sales volumes of laptops based on AMD solutions also increased by more than 50%. All this, of course, is reflected in the growth of the company's relative share in the processor market. To assess the current success of AMD, you can use the latest Mercury Research report, which brings together data on shipments of all x86 processors for the first quarter of 2019.

AMD's share in the processor market was able to exceed 13%

According to the report, the total share of AMD in the processor market was 13,3%, which is 1% better than the result of the previous quarter and more than one and a half times higher than the share that the "red" company had a year ago.

Share of AMD Q1'18 Q4'18 Q1'19
x86 processors in general 8,6% 12,3% 13,3%
Desktop processors 12,2% 15,8% 17,1%
Mobile processors 8,0% 12,1% 13,1%
Server processors 1,0% 3,2% 2,9%

If we talk about desktop processors, then AMD's results are noticeably more positive. At the end of the first quarter of 2019, the company won another 1,3% from Intel, and now its share in this segment has reached 17,1%. Over the year, AMD’s market power in the desktop segment was able to increase by 40% - in the first quarter of 2018, the company had only a 12% share. If you look at the situation in a historical vein, then we can say that by now AMD has been able to regain approximately the same market positions that it already had at the beginning of 2014.

AMD can boast of especially great success in the promotion of mobile processors. Here it was able to increase its share to 13,1%. And this looks like a very impressive achievement against the background of the fact that a year ago the company could only boast of an 8 percent share. As for the server segment, AMD now has only 2,9% in it, which is even lower than last quarter. But it should be borne in mind that a year ago the share was three times less, and this segment is characterized by the strongest inertia.

Over the past two quarters, AMD has been helped by the shortage of Intel processors to increase the supply of processors, and judging by the results presented, it is successfully using the moment. But now the competitor's chip shortage is beginning to wane, which will create some obstacles for AMD to further expansion. However, the company has high hopes for its Zen 2 architecture, which should lead to a noticeable improvement in the consumer qualities of the company's offerings in all market segments.
