Debian GNU/Hurd 2019 available

Submitted by Debian GNU/Hurd 2019 release, distribution editions Debian 10.0 "Buster", which combines the Debian environment with the GNU/Hurd kernel. The Debian GNU/Hurd repository contains approximately 80% of the packages of the total size of the Debian archive, including ports of Firefox and Xfce 4.12.

Debian GNU/Hurd and Debian GNU/KFreeBSD are the only Debian platforms based on a non-Linux kernel. The GNU/Hurd platform was not officially supported by Debian 10 architectures, so the Debian GNU/Hurd 2019 release was released separately and has the status of an unofficial Debian release. Pre-built builds with a custom built graphical installer and packages are currently only available for the i386 architecture. For loading prepared by NETINST installation images, CD and DVD, as well as an image to run in virtualization systems.

The GNU Hurd is a kernel developed as a replacement for the Unix kernel and designed as a set of servers that run on top of the GNU Mach microkernel and implement various system services such as file systems, network stack, file access control system. The GNU Mach microkernel provides an IPC mechanism used to organize the interaction of GNU Hurd components and build a distributed multi-server architecture.

In the new release:

  • Added support for LLVM;
  • Implemented optional support for TCP/IP stack LwIP;
  • Added ACPI translator, which is currently used only for shutdown after system shutdown;
  • Introduced PCI bus arbiter, which can be useful for correct PCI access control;
  • Added new optimizations affecting protected payload mode (similar to capabilities in Linux), paging control, message dispatching, and gsync synchronization.
