Shotwell photo manager 0.32 available

After four and a half years of development, the first release of a new stable branch of the Shotwell 0.32.0 photo collection management program has been published, which provides convenient cataloging and navigation through the collection, supports grouping by time and tags, provides tools for importing and converting new photos, supports typical image processing operations (rotation, red-eye removal, exposure adjustment, color optimization, etc.), contains tools for sharing on social networks such as Google Photos, Flickr and MediaGoblin. The project code is written in the Vala language and distributed under the LGPLv2.1+ license.

In the new release:

  • Added support for JPEG XL, WEBP, and AVIF (AV1 Image Format) image formats, as well as HEIF (HEVC), AVIF, MXF, and CR3 (Canon raw format) file formats.
  • By default, face recognition in photos and setting labels for snapping to faces is enabled. Tags like these can be used to group, sort, and find people in other photos. It is possible to build Shotwell without face recognition to reduce the size of dependencies (OpenCV).
  • The photo viewing interface and tools for processing them are adapted to work on screens with a high pixel density (HiDPI).
  • Added support for profiles and interface for creating/editing profiles.
  • When importing files from directories, the processing of the .nomedia file is implemented, which allows you to selectively disable content scanning.
  • Added haarcascade profile to use the eponymous object recognition algorithm in photographs.
  • Improved handling of images with GPS metadata. Added support for exporting GPS metadata.
  • Improved zoom control and touchpad scrolling.
  • The ability to specify hierarchical tags consisting of several levels (for example, "group / tag") is provided.
  • The libportal library is used to send photos and set desktop wallpapers from isolated environments (for example, when installing a flatpak package).
  • Added the ability to use multiple accounts for each external photo service (only works for Piwigo for now).
  • The libsecret library is used to store connection parameters for external services. Redesigned OAuth1 implementation.
  • Implemented a new panel for configuring plugins.
  • Faster navigation through directories with a very large number of files. Raw image reading speeded up.
  • Improved support for Flickr, Google Photos and Piwigo. Improved uploading photos to Google Photos in batch mode. Removed Facebook publishing code (was inoperable).
  • The source texts have been reorganized.
  • Improved dialog for editing past searches.
  • Added command line option -p/--show-metadata to display image metadata.
  • The size of the attached comment has been increased to 4 KB.
