Chrome OS 103 available

A release of the Chrome OS 103 operating system is available, based on the Linux kernel, the upstart system manager, the ebuild / portage assembly tool, open components and the Chrome 103 web browser. The Chrome OS user environment is limited to a web browser, and instead of standard programs, web applications are involved, however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop and taskbar. Chrome OS build 103 is available for most current Chromebook models. The source texts are distributed under the Apache 2.0 free license. In addition, testing of Chrome OS Flex, an edition for Chrome OS for use on desktops, continues. Enthusiasts also form unofficial builds for regular computers with x86, x86_64 and ARM processors.

Key changes in Chrome OS 103:

  • The structure includes a new application Screencast, which allows you to record and view videos that reflect the contents of the screen. The videos you create can be used to showcase your work, illustrate ideas, or prepare training materials. Recorded actions can be provided with speech explanations, which are automatically converted to text for easier search and navigation. The program also provides tools for cropping recorded footage, uploading to Google Drive, and sharing with other users.
  • Implemented Bluetooth quick pairing mode, which is available for devices that support the Fast Pair mechanism, such as Pixel Buds. Fast Pair-enabled devices are automatically detected and can be connected with a single button press in a pop-up notification without having to go to the settings section. Devices can also be linked to a Google account for ease of use across a user's Chrome OS and Android devices.
  • The Nearby Share feature, which allows you to quickly and securely share files between nearby devices, now has the ability to send credentials from Android devices to connect to the wireless network of a Chrome OS device. After the user accepts the submitted data, the device automatically uses the received credentials to connect to Wi-Fi.

  • Expanded the capabilities of Phone Hub, a smartphone control center that allows you to perform typical actions with a smartphone based on the Android platform from a Chromebook device, such as viewing incoming messages and notifications, monitoring battery level, accessing hotspot settings, determining the location of a smartphone. The new version provides access to a list of recently taken photos on a smartphone, which can be used in various Chrome OS applications without first manually downloading.
  • Added support for searching for device shortcuts and open tabs in the browser in the application panel (Launcher).
  • Separated settings related to the synchronization of browser and system data. As such, System Preferences now doesn't show options such as bookmark and tab sync, and Browser Settings doesn't mention app and desktop wallpaper sync.
