Chrome OS 106 and first gaming Chromebooks available

A release of the Chrome OS 106 operating system is available, based on the Linux kernel, the upstart system manager, the ebuild / portage assembly tool, open components and the Chrome 106 web browser. The Chrome OS user environment is limited to a web browser, and web applications are used instead of standard programs, however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop and taskbar. The source texts are distributed under the Apache 2.0 free license. Chrome OS build 106 is available for most current Chromebook models. Chrome OS Flex edition is offered for use on regular computers. Enthusiasts also form unofficial builds for regular computers with x86, x86_64 and ARM processors.

Key changes in Chrome OS 106:

  • Designed for taking handwritten notes, organizing ideas, and creating simple drawings, Cursive now saves stylus settings between restarts. Pen and marker settings such as color and size are remembered.
  • Changed the behavior of link handlers. Installed applications now by default do not process link clicks and all links open in the browser, but this behavior can be changed in the settings.
  • Fixed 10 vulnerabilities, of which three are marked as dangerous: insufficient input checking in DevTools (CVE-2022-3201) and access to already freed memory in Ash (CVE-2022-3305, CVE-2022-3306).

Additionally, we can mention the announcement of the first gaming laptops (Chromebook) from Acer, ASUS and Lenovo, supplied with Chrome OS and designed to work with cloud gaming services. The devices are equipped with screens with a refresh rate of 120Hz, gaming keyboards with less than 85ms input lag and RGB backlighting, Wi-Fi 6, Intel Core i3 / i5 CPU, 8 GB of RAM and advanced sound systems. Declared support for NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Amazon Luna gaming services, which provide free access to approximately 200 games from a total collection of 1500 games, including Control Ultimate Edition, Overcooked 2, Fortnite, and League of Legends.
