Chrome OS 108 available

A release of the Chrome OS 108 operating system is available, based on the Linux kernel, the upstart system manager, the ebuild / portage assembly tool, open components and the Chrome 108 web browser. The Chrome OS user environment is limited to a web browser, and web applications are involved instead of standard programs, however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop and taskbar. The source texts are distributed under the Apache 2.0 free license. Chrome OS build 108 is available for most current Chromebook models. Chrome OS Flex edition is offered for use on regular computers.

Key changes in Chrome OS 108:

  • The ink note application (Cursive) provides a canvas lock to prevent unintentional zooming and panning.
  • The Screencast application (allows you to record and view videos that reflect the contents of the screen) has added support for working with multiple accounts, allowing you to view screencasts associated with another account. For example, a child can add a school account to their Family Link profile and view screencasts created by the teacher.
  • Added the ability to roll back the update to the previous version (you can download and install any of the three previous versions of Chrome OS on the device).
  • The camera application has improved document scanning operations, adding support for scanning multiple pages and writing them as a multi-page PDF file.
  • The interface for connecting to a wireless network with the Captive Portal has been improved: the information content of messages about the need to log in has been increased, the definition of login pages has been simplified, and the reliability of connecting to authorization pages has been improved.
  • On touch screen devices, the virtual keyboard navigation has been simplified. By touching the top panel, the ability to change the language, go to the emoji library and activate handwriting is implemented. Adapted to fast input.
  • Recycle Bin support added to file manager. Files deleted from the My files section no longer disappear without a trace, but settle in the recycle bin, from which they can be restored within 30 days.
  • Added support for the presence sensor, which is enabled to automatically lock the screen after the user leaves and display a warning that an outsider is looking at the screen. The presence sensor is included with Lenovo ThinkPad Chromebooks.
