Android TV platform 12 available

Two months after the publication of the Android 12 mobile platform, Google has formed an edition for smart TVs and set-top boxes Android TV 12. The platform is only offered for testing by application developers so far - ready-made builds have been prepared for the Google ADT-3 set-top box (including an OTA update released) and Android Emulator for TV. Publication of firmware updates for consumer devices such as the Google Chromecast is expected in early 2022.

The main innovations of Android TV 12:

  • New user interface design that is adapted to 4K resolution screens and supports the background blur effect.
  • Added additional font size settings for people with vision problems.
  • Added the ability to change the refresh rate of the screen to suppress distortion during playback, such as jitter of moving objects that occurs when the frame rate of the video does not match the refresh rate of the screen.
  • API elements that provide information about screen modes, HDR formats, and surround sound have been stabilized.
  • Added microphone and camera activity indicators that appear when the application accesses the camera or microphone.
  • Added switches to force turn off the microphone and camera.
  • The ability to authenticate a device through the Android KeyStore API has been implemented.
  • Support for the HDMI CEC 2.0 specification has been added, allowing you to remotely control devices connected via the HDMI port through a single remote control.
  • A framework for interacting with TV tuners Tuner HAL 1.1 is proposed, featuring support for the DTV standard DTMB (in addition to ATSC, ATSC3, DVB C/S/T and ISDB S/S3/T) and improved performance.
  • Improved protection model for TV tuners.
