The release of the Mattermost 7.0 messaging system, aimed at ensuring communication between developers and enterprise employees, has been published. The code for the server side of the project is written in Go and is distributed under the MIT license. The web interface and mobile applications are written in JavaScript using React; the desktop client for Linux, Windows and macOS is built on the Electron platform. MySQL and PostgreSQL can be used as DBMS.
Mattermost is positioned as an open alternative to the Slack communications system and allows you to receive and send messages, files and images, track the history of conversations and receive notifications on your smartphone or PC. Slack-prepared integration modules are supported, as well as a large collection of custom modules for integrating with Jira, GitHub, IRC, XMPP, Hubot, Giphy, Jenkins, GitLab, Trac, BitBucket, Twitter, Redmine, SVN, and RSS/Atom.
Main innovations:
- Support for collapsed threads with replies has been stabilized and enabled by default. Comments are now collapsed and do not take up space in the main message thread. Information about the presence of comments is displayed in the form of the βN repliesβ label, clicking on which leads to the expansion of replies in the sidebar.
- A test version of new mobile applications for Android and iOS has been proposed, in which the interface has been modernized and the ability to work with several Mattermost servers at once has appeared.
- There is experimental support for voice calling and screen sharing. Voice calls are available in both desktop and mobile applications, as well as in the web interface. While on a voice call, your team can continue text chatting, managing projects and tasks, reviewing checklists, and doing anything else in Mattermost without interrupting the call.
- The interface for communicating in channels includes a panel with tools for formatting messages, allowing you to use markup without learning Markdown syntax.
- A built-in (inline) checklist editor (βPlaybooksβ) has been added, allowing you to change lists of typical work for teams in various situations locally from the main interface, without opening separate dialogs.
- Added information about teams' use of checklists to the statistics report.
- It is possible to connect handlers and actions (for example, sending notifications to specified channels) that are called when the state of checklists is updated.
- An experimental sidebar Apps Bar has been implemented with the most commonly used plugins and built-in applications (for example, for integration with external services such as Zoom).
- Enabled the formation of DEB and RPM packages with a desktop application. The packages provide support for Debian 9+, Ubuntu 18.04+, CentOS/RHEL 7 and 8.
