Bringing to the point of absurdity: The Culling developers revive the royal battle, but at a terrible price

One of the first battle royales, The Culling: Origins, will revive on Xbox One this Thursday, May 14 after being closed at the end of 2017. The developers have made many fixes and improvements to the project, including a very absurd monetization model.

Bringing to the point of absurdity: The Culling developers revive the royal battle, but at a terrible price

According to Xaviant studio operations director Josh Van Veld, the team receives messages every day from fans of The Culling asking them to return the game. Over the past few months, the developers have been working on fulfilling the wishes of the fans. According to Van Veld, Xaviant's new approach aims to provide stability, low server costs, and keep players interested for years to come.

So, the new Xaviant approach is that:

  • For free, players can only participate in one online match per day. If they win, they will receive one token for access to the battle as a reward;
  • three tokens cost $0,99, ten tokens $2,99, twenty tokens $4,99;
  • there will be an online pass that will grant access to an unlimited number of matches. Available for seven days for $1,99 or thirty days for $5,99;
  • there will no longer be premium items or loot boxes for real money in the game. Gamers can level up, earn containers, and unlock supply drops through live matches;
  • The Culling is no longer shareware. Even taking into account all of the above, the game itself has yet to be purchased for $5,99.

The graphics quality on Xbox One has been greatly improved with a 30% increase in resolution, added anti-aliasing and improved frame rates. AI behavior has been overhauled to provide a more "convincing experience" offline. In addition, a side effect of the rework was the deletion of the original game's saves. All unlocked content has been reset.

The Culling: Origins will also be coming to PC in the future.
