The UBports project, which took over the development of the Ubuntu Touch mobile platform after Canonical pulled away from it, has published an OTA-23 (over-the-air) firmware update. The project is also developing an experimental port of the Unity 8 desktop, which has been renamed to Lomiri.

Ubuntu Touch OTA-23 is still based on Ubuntu 16.04, but lately the development efforts have been focused on preparing for the transition to Ubuntu 20.04. Of the changes in OTA-23, it is noted:

  • Initial support for FM radio has been implemented, which can only be used on BQ E4.5, BQ E5 and Xiaomi Note 7 Pro devices for now (the range of supported devices will be expanded in future releases).
  • The messaging app has improved MMS handling for large attachments and disabled the stripping of "&", "<" and ">" special characters from text messages.
  • The media player now supports hardware accelerated video decoding on the Jingpad A1 tablet.
  • Provided the ability to use the Aethercast protocol to connect to external screens wirelessly.
  • All devices have a quick turn-off and turn-on of the screen, independent of ambient light, which allows you to quickly access the device and protects against making accidental calls due to putting your phone in your pocket while it is not turned off.
