RAD is unlike other games about life after the end of the world - the trailer and screenshots allow you to capture the special quirkiness of Double Fine's projects, and the 80s styling makes it even more recognizable. The development is led by Lee Petty, the author of very unusual Stacking and Headlander. The world of the new action game known as Fallow survived the apocalypse twice. The radioactive wasteland, filled with "unknown and indescribable" creatures, continues to change before the player's eyes (procedural environment generation helps with this). In the role of a teenage boy, gamers will try to save the world by making the desert bloom. But for this, the protagonist will have to sacrifice his health by acquiring mutations that improve his abilities.

“The fate of the world depends on you, your trusty bit and strange abilities that you will acquire at the expense of your health while traveling through the wasteland,” the developers say. “Gradually, you will lose your human form, gaining strength instead.”

“We are almost there and I can’t wait to show everyone what we did with RAD,” wrote Petty for a fresh press release. — One of the best stages of work was connected with the analysis of early feedback from the participants of the closed beta test. I would like our fans and gamers who are going to get acquainted with the project to know that we hear them and try to make sure that this game will want to come back again and again.”

At the PAX East show in April, the developers allowed journalists to try out a demo of RAD. Employee DualShockers Logan Moore admitted that the game intrigued him. Although the gameplay seemed rustic to him, he noted a pleasant resemblance to the studio's past work and the successful design of the bosses. In an interview with Petty, he also learned some of the details. For example, it turned out that gamers will have something like a "home location" - a city in which you can improve the bat and prepare for new "races" across the wasteland. The environment will be varied - the authors are preparing several biomes.

On the occasion of the announcement of the release date, Double Fine launched a fanart contest for RAD. Participants are required to create graffiti that would fit into her world as best as possible. The best entry will go into the game itself, and its author will be awarded several prizes, including a skateboard, a glow-in-the-dark figure and a floppy disk. All details can be found here.

RAD's Western publisher is Bandai Namco. Still on the publisher's site accepted applications for participation in the closed beta testing, which is held only on Steam.

Double Fine didn't release any games last year, but 2017 saw three releases: the VR puzzle adventure Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruins, setting up the events of the sequel, another prototype collection of Amnesia Fortnite and Full Throttle Remastered, an improved version of the classic 1995 quest. Now she also works over Psychonauts 2. It is expected to be released this year on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The Swedish company Starbreeze Studios is supposed to act as a publisher, but its difficult financial situation could disrupt these plans.
