Techland Lead Designer Tymon Smektala spoke with GamesIndustry about how the world of Dying Light 2 is shaped by player decisions, a feature he said was not originally planned.
At E3 2019, Techland said that in the first playthrough you will only be able to see about 50% of the game - mainly due to the new ability to influence both the story and the world with your choices. When the developers analyzed the shortcomings
The developer said that the technological capabilities of the new C-Engine allowed the team to do more than just a linear game in the open world. Moreover, you can change not only the story, but also the environment. Techland came to this decision about two years ago. βWe started working on it and realized that itβs a powerful feeling for players because they make a decision and then find that the world around them has changed because of it,β continues the lead designer.
But don't expect big things from Dying Light 2. Although it's an open-world AAA game and will have a lot of content, Smektala says it's not as big as Assassin's Creed or Far Cry. βWe are still, subjectively, a small studio. About 300 people. [β¦] We made a lot of content, but not two games, because that would be too much for us,β explained lead designer Techland.
