Recently, Essential, owned by Android co-founder Andy Rubin,
This is evidenced by a new branch called r-preview, which was opened by the Essential engineers in a repository on GitHub. This commit is to make Essential Phone compatible with the Android 11 Generic System Image. GSI is an unmodified Android system image that can be installed on any Project Treble-enabled smartphone.
Confirming the development, Jean-Baptist Theou, System Software Lead at Essential, noted on GitHub that the developers "required to test the final build for Android 11 before it is made available to the user community." Upon completion of the testing phase, Essential will release pre-built images for vendors, as well as boot and system images, which will be installed by users on smartphones before downloading Android 11 GSI from Google.
This means that in the near future, owners of Essential smartphones that have unlocked the bootloader will be able to install Android 11 on their devices, even if there is no official update to this version of the platform in the end.
