The release of the code was a response to a community request to provide the ability to create modifications for Command & Conquer games. Electronic Arts went further and, to simplify the creation of modifications, decided to immediately open the code of the base libraries under a free license.
The code will be open simultaneously with the publication of the new edition , in which these games will be expanded and adapted to run on modern systems. Including graphics will be improved for 4K screens, new music will be added, the sidebar interface will be modernized, battle review and replay modes will be added, subtitles will appear, autosave, map editor, camera zoom mode, more than a hundred missions, 250 maps and much more.
So will be one of the first major RTS game series to make its code available under the GPL. Moreover,
publishing code under the GPL will ensure its compatibility with existing open source projects ΠΈ , within which the development of an unofficial network stack and an open engine for the strategy games Command & Conquer Tiberian Dawn, C&C Red Alert and Dune 2000 is underway. The presence of original code under the GPL will make it possible to transfer the code to CnCNet and Open RA without restrictions, as well as create new reincarnations Command & Conquer games.
Users will also be able to create not only new maps, but also combat units, change graphic elements and gameplay logic. For example, by experimenting with code already shared with some community members, an implementation of a nuclear tank that fires nuclear missiles was prepared.
