Epistar intends to form a joint venture with Chinese LED display manufacturer Leyard Optoelectronic to produce Mini and Micro LED chips and modules.

The authorized capital of the joint venture will be 300 million yuan ($42,9 million), with Yenrich Technology, a subsidiary of Epistar, and Leyard each having 50% of its shares.

It is expected that at the first stage the joint venture will receive investments in the amount of 1 billion yuan ($143 million).

The joint venture is expected to begin production of LED chips and displays with Mini LED zonal backlighting in the second half of 2020. Production of Micro LED chips is scheduled for a later date.

The new venture will face competition from another joint venture, BOE Pixey, formed by China's BOE Technology and US company Rohinni to produce Mini and Micro LED modules, production of which will begin in the second half of 2020.

In addition, Chinese LED chip manufacturer San'an Optoelectronics has reportedly developed Micro LED chips with a diameter of 0,02 mm and is also planning to set up a production base for Mini and Micro LED modules in central China.
