Statistical data about how Chinese programmers live, do

Eat rice, pray Amitofo, love cats
Hello, hello, friends. Today, Russia is actively cooperating with China in the field of IT-artificial intelligence, big data, and there are even plans to create a “Russian-Chinese digital valley”.

This article is a small digression into the Chinese IT job market and the life of Chinese programmers and is a compilation of translations of Chinese articles with my microcomments. The statistics presented here may be useful to those who may be planning to work with China or in China, or if suddenly Chinese programmers are his target audience. Let's see how they are!

Job situation

Data taken from Articles from the website www.csdn.net (This is the largest platform in Chinese for IT professionals). The author parsed 90 job postings for the keyword "JP", and this is what happened (data as of November 000):

The salary situation is strikingly different (in RMB/month):

What can you buy with so much moneyHere prices for November, on some of the most everyday products for us (so that there is no culture shock), for example, in Beijing, although, admittedly, the prices there are not the highest:
tomatoes - 3 yuan / jin (yes, by the way, in China they hang with jingles - this is our half a kilo with an error, so in rubles there will be 3 * 2 * 9 = 54 rubles per kg of tomatoes - in general, equal to Haymarket!)
potatoes - 1,52 yuan / jin
cabbage - 0,44 yuan / jin
rice - 2,71 yuan / jin
pork 25,8 yuan/jin
white meat chicken - 14,85 yuan / jin
eggs 5,83 (yes, yes, they are also sold in China by weight, not by 9)
milk -2,5 yuan / 240 ml
95 gasoline - 7.19 yuan / liter (max)
bus - from 2 yuan for 10 km (+1 yuan for the next 5 km)
metro - 3 yuan; pass gives 50% discount
Compared to the previous year, Python has the largest increase in job openings: a __magic__37% jump! (ref)

Chinese Programming Situation

Habr has article about national programming languages bmforce, and very opportunely I will give a couple of examples for China: the local language is Easy (易), as well as Chinese Python (with changes in the main parser), which, by the way, has turned into a “python constrictor” in China. Interestingly, a number of keywords exist in synonyms; so and, self, in, True, False, break, etc. are presented in two variants. Work is in full swing on translating the official Python documentation into Chinese. (Translation progress by version).

But Chinese PL exist, rather, for educational purposes. Junior+ programmers already write in English. But the main thing is the pool of knowledge, and here, in addition to English resources, Chinese popular IT sites come to the rescue.

IT sites such as www.csdn.net (already mentioned above) www.iteye.com, segmentfault.com, www.chinaunix.net, www.tuicool.com and many others, not to mention the numerous QQ and Weixin ("Wechat" in our opinion) communities.

Collected data

In general, the three main questions that the Chinese ask immediately after you announce your name are: how old are you, are you married / married and how much do you earn. And in the colorful statistics presented below, collected for the first half of 2019 on the JetBrains platforms、Hired、HackerRank、极光大数据 (Aurora Big Data) and others, the Chinese programmers themselves had to answer these questions, among other things. The study involved 39000 programmers (I hope this is a representative sample for China). So…

Language distribution

The most widely used programming language in China today is Java (we have already noticed this in vacancies), Go is named the most promising, and Python is the first in terms of the number of students studying it.

83% of developers in China today choose Java 8, and Spring Boot has already become a popular web development framework.

There are a lot of strong JavaScript front-end developers and Java back-end developers in China right now. And now the front-end engineers are in great demand on the market. In addition, Android app developers now account for 15,2%.

Programming Habits
Programmers prefer dark colors, 89% customize the IDE in one way or another, and most prefer dark tones, choose a dark theme for the editor.

77% of programmers said they can listen to music while programming, and their favorite genres are electronic music, pop and rock.

The survey showed that developers aged 25 and over tend to work remotely.

Knowledge of programming languages
Each developer on average knows 4 languages and wants to learn 4 more languages.
Young developers aged 18-24 plan to learn 6 languages on average, older developers aged 35 and over plan to learn 3 more languages

73,7% answered that learning to program is mostly self-learning.

More than 15% started learning programming before the age of 16.

76% of programmers believe that participation in advanced training courses will be useful when looking for a job; 24% see no need for this.

Distribution within China

The largest number of developers work in the very south of China - in the province of Guangdong.

Why is thatAlready from the 16th century, there was a trade with Europeans in Chinese jewelry - silk and porcelain. And then, more: today it is China's largest importer and exporter, the most open and most dynamically developing investment environment. There is the city of Shenzhen, well known for its electronics industry. And the GDP of Guangdong = the GDP of Russia.
This is one of the most revolutionary regions: it was here that one of the first communist circles in China was organized. It remains revolutionary to this day: it is here that all technological developments and trade economic experiments are carried out.
If you look at the cities, the leaders are Beijing with 14.5% of all developers, Shanghai with 13.9%;followed by Hangzhou - "Chinese Silicon Valley", where the headquarters of Alibaba Group is located, then - Shenzhen and Guangzhou ( just both in Guangdong), Chengdu, Nanjing, etc.

Distribution by age and sex

Slightly more than half of the programmers are 25-29 years old, and there are very few over 35 years old.

Many programmers think about what they will do after 35 besides programming, they acquire knowledge and skills in other areas, and after 35 they can gradually move into architecture, management or other positions.

The ratio m:g = 12:1.

Hours of operation

Working overtime is the norm. March 26, 2019 was posted on Github repository about companies supporting the "996" system, which violates Chinese labor laws. Already on April 9, the repository received 200 stars and became the most popular repository. But it was bombarded with spam and blocked in China. "996" - guess what? 9 am to 9 pm 6 days a week.

On average, programmers work 47,7 hours a week, and programmers 45,9 hours.

33,5% of programmers work more than 60 hours a week.

The longest working hours for programmers are in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. Shanghai programmers are the busiest, with an average of 48,9 hours per week. Shenzhen and Chengdu work an average of 47,0 hours a week.

Average salaries

The average salary in the country is 150 yuan, the average age of programmers with a salary of 000 yuan or more is 400 years old.

In Shanghai, 16,9% of programmers earn 20 yuan or more per month.

Here is a visual picture of the distribution of salaries per year. This one here is similar to B - 万 - this is 10.

Are programmers satisfied with their salary?

The proportion of programmers who feel that the salary is so-so, or are dissatisfied, is 93,3%.

50% of software architects/system analysts are satisfied with their current salary.

41,4% of programmers are worried about their salary and increasing the level of knowledge and qualifications.

Change of job

78,5% changed jobs, and at the same time earnings increased.

The most common reasons are the lack of opportunities for development, the discrepancy between the real situation in the company and the expectations, as well as the transition to a higher salary.

Health & Fitness

1/4 of programmers go in for sports less than once a month.

58,3% of programmers go in for sports once a week or more.

44,4% of middle and senior managers of the surveyed companies go in for sports twice a week or more. The more the position is related to management, the more sports.

Programmers from Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu love sports the most: about 40% of programmers from these cities go in for sports twice a week, and go to bed mostly from 11 am to 1 am.

63,3% of the programmers surveyed currently complain of some symptoms of declining health, and 34,8% of programmers regularly experience fatigue.

The main problems are - regular fatigue, diseases of the cervical spine, overweight.

60% of programmers don't eat breakfast regularly, and 20% of programmers don't eat breakfast.

And for the Chinese, breakfast is not a cup of coffee.Already from the very early morning on all street stalls and in cafes they boil, steam, fry all kinds of cereals, noodles, eggs, pies, squeeze juices from carrots, chumiza, beans - so skipping breakfast is very serious.

Personal life

42% of programmers are single: single male programmers - 42,5%, and women - 35,6%.

The main criterion for choosing a soulmate is appearance (ta-daaa), they also pay attention to hobbies and educational level, while economic level, family, nature of work, height and registration at the place of residence (hukou) are not so important.

Movement around the city

61,6% of programmers use public transport and metro.

The most preferred games are simulations and strategies.

52% said that they sometimes see a code in their dreams, and 17% said that they see such dreams very often.

33% of the programmers surveyed like dogs, and cats - 26%, both - 23%.
But most programmers, because of the nature of the job, get cats.

instead of an epilogue

As a result and generalization of all that we talked about today - the section "Programmers are joking" - a couple of the most funny answers from the questionnaires for collecting all the statistics above. As you know, in every joke there is a share of a joke.

What did I spend all my time on? Looks like it's looking for bugs...

- to the question of marital status.

Now I understand why so many singles!

- to the fact that a large percentage of programmers devote their free time to films and toys.

About personal car:

"Maserati" has recently fallen in price to 500 yuan, and for me and on a travel card for 000 yuan everything will be green!

About workload:

I rent housing only to come and spend the night, well, so that my cat lives there.

Work is like feelings: it’s not a fact that in the end you will choose what you love more.
